To wait for something can be very difficult. Jumping into something irrationally is much simpler but can have drastic consequences. To be patient is to look into the unknown and have the faith that whatever we are looking forward to, will come. That is very difficult to do because at any given moment, there is no guarantee that our desired event will come. Some things can be foreseen by those who have the experience and when their wisdom believes whatever we are waiting for will come, then we really should consider heeding their advice. Be patient - it will come.

Look around us. There are a lot of unattractive people, not because they are ugly, but because they are missing smiles on their faces. I am just as guilty of this as any other person. I often find it difficult to smile because of all the doom and gloom out there today. But what I have noticed is that when I do smile, there is an inexplicable sense of beautifulness in me, that inevitably radiates towards those around me. This causes more smiles and more beautifulness, and even the doom and gloom turns to bloom.

Dead End

At a psychological level, all conflicts in this world stem from the feeling of one or all sides (usually all) that they have been cornered and have no choice but to react. This reaction then leads to and intensification of the feeling of being cornered on the other side, leading to more reaction, leading to more bad feelings, leading to more reaction, and so on. This will go on and on until one side devestates the other(s), one side is devestated, or all sides are devestated. Usually all sides get devestated in some senseless way. The result is a dead end for all, figuratively and literally.

What if all sides were to give each other some breathing room? As the saying goes, "throw the dog a bone." If we treat all sides as parts of a whole and each side makes a bit of compromise and contributes to the whole, the resulting sum of all the parts must by necessity equal to something greater than all the original pieces.

Easier said than done obviously because there is too much pride, too much pain, and too much history.

It takes a lot of courage to stand up for what is right when everyone else turns the other way. It is easy to take the popular choice but it takes tremendous strength to go against the grain in what we believe is true. That is not to say we must be contrarian to everything. We must be objective. We must look at the facts and determine what the truth is. It may be that 99% of the time the popular choice is right, but in that 1% when we know the popular choice is wrong, we must go with our instincts. In doing what we believe, we can live a dignified live without regrets.

Hope

Barack Obama became the first black president in the history of the United States today. He stood there amongst the million or so people who came to witness history being made and delivered his speech, without fear.

Although great expectations are on his shoulders, it is not whether this one man can single-handedly steer his country and perhaps the world out of its troubles. No, that's only part of it. What is inspiring about today is what Mr. Obama represents. And that is hope. Hope for the millions upon millions of Americans and perhaps the billions in the world.

When there is hope, there is less fear. And when there is less fear, there are more brave actions. It is this powerful spirit that will drive the willpower to move forward towards recovery. When there is hope, the recovery has already begun.

Depression Stance

I simply love the quote above. It speaks to a universal truth that body and mind are intertwined - body affects mind and mind affects body. Do those things that help you feel better no matter how stupid it may seem at that very moment, and guess what, you might just feel better! Think silly thoughts and guess what, your body suffers. One feeds on the other.

Start small. Take baby steps. Before you know it, everything looks clearer. Afterall, how can you see the sun when your head faces the ground, right?

Fear

Think of this scenario (not an experiment I am recommending but I'm sure older siblings will find it fun) - a kid is in a lighted room and is happily playing; when asked to close his eyes, he'll happily do it without any consequences. However, turn off the light and the child screams. Why? Nothing has changed in the room other than the light going off. It was dark when he closed his eyes and everything was ok.

The darkness in the room heightened the kid's feeling of being vulnerable. The unknown is what fear is all about and it's all in the mind. Fear also about unmet expectations. The kid did not expect the room to be dark - it was lighted and turned dark.

It's so important to put fear in its place and not let it consume us. If the light goes out, don't panic. Just stand up, go and turn on the light. If the light won't come on, leave the room. This is obviously easier said than done. The point is when fear creeps in, stay calm, because more often than not, things will get better as time passes. Assess the situation, yes, but don't take drastic actions without looking at things with a rational mind.

Persistence

If we can still shed a tear, there is hope that compassion is alive and well. When was the last time we cried? Whether it is in reaction to a sad movie, a nostalgic song, human tragedy on the news or some emotional memories, we need to cry, even if it's a little, lest our human side be left to dry.

It seems, in the state of the world today, compassion is being set aside, in favour of a focus on economics or war. As examples, donations are at an eighteen-year low at the United Way because people are looking after their own pockets first and the world is seeing not less, but more hostility. Whether at a personal or state level, the lost of even a bit of compassion is putting lives at risk.

The next time you turn on the news, watch a movie, listen to a song or reminisque, tell yourself it's okay to cry a little for that is compassion.

Do Something

A new year brings new adventures and discoveries. Many are saying it will be a tough year ahead and maybe it will be. But, that is no reason to stop moving, no reason to stop the adventure, no reason to stop the discoveries. It is more a reason to forge forward.

Whatever path we may decide take, it will certainly lead "there", wherever "there" is. We can try to see and imagine the destination all we want, but more often than not, when we get there, it is totally different what we saw or imagined. We may reach there and end up on a different road, and that is fine too. Just keep moving!

World Still Has Eyes

There is hope because the world is still not blind! But, even as the year closes to an end, bombs are being exchanged between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Many innocent people have lost not only their eyes, but their lives. I really hope someone there will find wisdom in Mahatma Gandhi's quote above and stop the violence.

Happiness

The image that comes to mind is the Walmart black Friday incident last month whereby a store employee was trampled to death by an onslaught of shoppers desperately seeking bargains. It would seem most people in the crowd only had one thing in their minds: their own happiness.

I wish everyone would let the wise words of the Dalai Lama guide us in our pursuit of happiness. What is the value of our own happiness when those around us become unhappy as a result of our own relentlessness?

I truly admire those who could set aside their own selfishness to help others be happy. Bravo!

This coming year, I will ask myself whether I have done enough for those around me and those whom I encounter less fortunate than me. I hope you will do the same.

How, I wonder has the world forgotten, or not know, this simple little phrase. As I write this, bombs are exploding, guns are being fired, and people are being killed. People are killing people. What's wrong with that sentence. It doesn't sound right at all. No, people are not smiling at each other. That is the problem, though I suspect in today's world, someone smiling at another can be a cause for bombs, guns and killings.

Peace is what must happen. A kind, gentle and sincere smile has to be the catalyst. There really is no other simpler solution than that.

At a smaller and no less important level, we can resolve to smile more at those around us; we can resolve to make peace every single day!

As some may fret about our dwindling wealth this year, it is paramount to remember that there are those with nothing to eat, nothing to wear, nowhere to live, sickness, or a combination thereof, or something even more severe. This has probably been said many times by many people before but it is worth repeating.

In our society of privilege, it is too easy to take for granted what we have. This is especially true for, but definitely not limited to, children. For those of us who have, or have influence over, children, it is so vital to instill in them a sense of gratefulness for what they have.

The Brave Fishermen
